The Virginia Beach Convention Center fully opened in January 2007, unveiling more than 500,000 square feet. Meetings professionals are invited to explore the depths of this architectural wonder, including a 31,000 square-foot state-of-the-art ballroom, a 150,000 square-foot column-free exhibit hall, 28,929 square feet of meeting space and 2,230 free parking spaces.
Prepared by the world-renowned architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the architects took their cue for the building from the area's natural water environment. The design for the facility features two distinct architectural elements that support this theme: sweeping expanses of glass, braced by visible interior trusses that suggest wind-filled sails and rigging, this glass "wall" sits in a large water feature, and a 150-foot tower reminiscent of a lighthouse. The design of the new Center allows amazing flexibility to accommodate and fully equip groups of all sizes. The center's unique iconic and functional design welcomes delegates and provides the backdrop for a successful and memorable convention.
