Cheyenne is the clean, friendly, family-oriented capital of Wyoming. Far from its reputation as a dusty, old western town with not much to do, Cheyenne actually has lots of things to do and see that can be enjoyed and appreciated by the whole family. Even more, a vacation in Cheyenne is on the inexpensive side.

What to Do

The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens makes for an enjoyable way to spend the day almost any time of year. Located in Lions Park, this lush, colorful space is a sharp contrast to the surrounding high plains environment. There is no entrance fee, so feel free to check out the solar powered conservatory, diverse plant species, and Engine 1242, the oldest train engine in Wyoming. Another entertaining activity to do is find all the 8 foot tall cowboy boots that are spread throughout the city. All of these boots are works of art painted to depict important historical events of Wyoming and Cheyenne.

There are plenty of other attractions such as the Big Boy Steam Engine (largest in the world), horse drawn carriage rides, the F.E. Warren Air Force Base, the Messenger Museum (filled with western displays), the Farmers Market, and the Cowgirls of the West Museum. There are many National Historic Landmarks in Cheyenne as well, The Wyoming State Capital Building and the Cheyenne Depot among others.

What to Eat

Cheyenne is known for its homemade, all-American food, so while in the city make sure to visit some homey mom n’ pop diners. Gourmet burgers, hot dogs, bagels, soups, and salads are popular options. Delicious breads, pastries, and/or desserts are available fresh at places such as the Bread Basket Bakery, Boston Donuts, and Eileen’s Colossal Cookies. Breakfast foods are eaten all day at Egg and I and the Dynasty Café. On a hot, summer day, don’t forget to stop for a cold tread at Culver’s Frozen Custard and Better Burgers or Cold Stone Creamery.

Where to Stay

This city has a unique collection of hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, and RV Parks. The RV Parks are quite popular due to the amount of people on road trips that are just traveling through. Prices are all reasonable; accommodations can be found anywhere from $15 to $200. Bed and breakfasts are usually quite cozy and the people very friendly and attentive. Nagle Warren Mansion Bed and Breakfast is highly recommended. It is a completely restored mansion near downtown Cheyenne.
